Job Summary:
To undertake project and technical work, including engineering, design and analysis in support of the company’s naval architecture, and marine engineering contracts.  The job may require work at the company’s UK offices and also at client or subcontractor premises and to undertake occasional business trips to offshore vessels or installations, factories and shipyards.

Reports To: Senior Structural Engineer

Key Responsibilities
  • Understand and analyse assigned project requirements, objectives and criteria.
  • Calculate vessel motions/stability/strength.
  • Carry out stability calculations, maintain vessel stability software and documentation through the preparation of stability submissions, software models, inclining experiments, displacement checks etc.
  • Undertake structural design calculations to Class requirements where applicable in support of vessel upgrades and modifications.
  • Undertake structural design calculations and proposals for temporary equipment installations and sea-fastenings in support of Houlder proposals and check proposals from third party design consultants.
  • Ensure the safety of ship lifting equipment designs.
  • Ensure that all proposed works to be carried out onboard vessels within the naval architect’s scope are carried out to best industry and statutory standards in a safe and cost effective manner.
  • Check deck strength calculations in support of Houlder proposals and submissions from third party design consultants.
  • Carry out calculations to ensure that dock block loading will not compromise the structural integrity of the vessel.
  • Contribute to design reviews to ensure that technical objectives are achieved.
  • Assist in preparing bid documents that require technical input appropriate to his/her skills.
  • Assist with presentations and the submission of reports and whenever appropriate promote the company’s capabilities to clients.
  • Contribute to vessel structural surveys, deadweight surveys, inclining experiments, equipment tests and other site activities.
  • Ensure that all design work carried out is submitted for review, checking and approval in accordance with the engineering procedures or when specified to the client’s project quality plan.
  • Ensure that all work carried out is properly recorded and undertaken in accordance with company quality control procedures.
  • Carry out or contribute to safety/risk assessments for allocated ship and equipment tasks and/or prior to undertaking site visits.  
  • Undertake any other duties as may be required from time to time by project managers/directors.

Experience:
Essential
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a marine design consultancy or similar organisation.
  • Familiar with specialist software for stability, motions and hydraulics, mooring, structural and FE analysis.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office 2010/Windows 7 applications including Excel, Word etc and other software such as AutoCAD and NAPA.
  • Aware/limited experience of conceptual design of offshore vessels, layout and budget estimation (eg. naval vessels, passenger and cargo vessels, semi-subs, pipe layers, dive support vessels).
  • Aware/limited experience of undertaking offshore motions analysis, mooring system design and analysis.
  • Use of Classification Society Rules.
Desirable
  • Familiar with and up to date with design developments, statutory regulations, and codes of practice for civil and naval shipping and offshore industries.
  • Operational experience (e.g. sea trials, sub-sea or drilling) and the ability to provide technical support on projects from enquiry stage to completion.
  • Able to contribute to a project to produce sound, cost-effective designs.

Knowledge\Qualifications:
  • Essential: BEng (Hons), MEng or MSc (or equivalent) in Naval Architecture, Ship Science or other relevant subject (minimum Class 2:1/Distinction (or equivalent)
  • Preferred: Member, Graduate or Student Member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects.

  • Must hold Full Driving Licence
  • An Offshore survival certification may be required at a later date, if there is a specific project requirement.
