Rio Tinto Marine (RTM) exists to provide Rio Tinto with comprehensive understanding and management of all aspects of marine transportation, global freight markets and the international regulatory environment. RTM provides Rio Tinto with a core competency in marine logistics, project evaluation and improvement of the productivity of marine assets, especially at the ship-shore interface. The principle function of the Portfolio Management group is to build a competitive, flexible freight portfolio which is managed in the context of a highly volatile, dynamic market environment. Portfolio Management should provide the most competitive freight solutions to support profitable growth whilst ensuring that RTM is at the forefront of all their operating markets.


As Global Portfolio Manager – Handy/Supramax you will have key accountability for managing the freight chartering, scheduling and operations aspects for all business associated with Handysize, Handymax and Supramax vessels, ensuring cutting edge operational performance and administration. Additionally you will ensure customer requirements are met and that RTM’s operational plans and performance targets are achieved. You will provide best practice chartering and freight trading, analysis and understanding of market dynamics as well as risk management accountabilities. Ultimately, these tasks will be underpinned by your ability to build and maintain excellent relationships with key internal and external suppliers.


To be successful in this role, you will be a results orientated, commercially focused shipping professional with solid technical and commercial skills within the dry bulk freight market. You will have sound analytical and strategic thinking capabilities, strong negotiating skills and the ability to grasp and understand customers’ key drivers. Exposure to commercial negotiations and deal structuring and a deep knowledge of typical contracting protocols and the elements that underpin the ultimate cost of shipping are critical. Excellent relationship building skills and relevant qualifications in a technical or commercial discipline are essential. Finally, experience with commodity marketing and trading is highly desirable.
