Vacancy: Faculty positions at World Maritime University

The World Maritime University was established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations.  WMU wishes to enhance its role as a global centre of excellence for postgraduate education and research in the maritime field.  WMU offers Master of Science programs in several maritime areas, and a Ph.D. in Maritime Administration.  We are seeking to fill two faculty positions within the next months: one position in the area of shipping management, with a speciality in ship finance, and the other in naval architecture or marine engineering, with experience in maritime education and training.  We are looking to appoint at the Assistant Professor level, but candidates with exceptional academic qualifications or extensive leadership experience in the maritime field may be appointed at a higher rank.

Required qualifications, competencies and professional experience


The successful candidates will have:

■a doctorate in the area of either shipping management, maritime law or naval architecture/marine engineering
■experience in teaching at postgraduate level
■a track record in research and scholarly publication
■professional experience in the maritime transport sector is desirable, as is seafaring experience
■fluency in spoken and written English
■effective communication skills in an international and diverse academic community.


Responsibilities of the post-holder

Assistant Professors are expected, under the supervision of the Vice-President (Academic) to be engaged in:
■teaching, including engagement in the MSc teaching program in Malmö, Shanghai, Dalian, and other locations as needed and assigned
■involvement in Professional Development Courses (PDCs), distance education courses etc as required
■mentoring of PhD and MSc students and supervision of research theses/dissertations;
■scholarship in the form of publications in peer-reviewed journals, books, book chapters, etc
■the development of research projects, submission of project proposals, management of projects
■presentation of research findings at professional conferences and meetings
■service on WMU committees and work groups, and active participation in administrative, academic, and curriculum duties.
